NHL Weekend MN Pulse Check

  • Friday night Kyle Okposo and the New York Islanders were facing Alexander Ovechkin's Washington Capitals and the Islanders got the improbable victory. Okposo had an Ovechkin like goal in the first period tying the game at 1-1. Okposo took a neutral zone turnover and did a one-man transition bringing the puck into the Capitals zone at full speed before snanpping one home.

  • Also on Friday Alex Goligoski remained hot scoring a huge goal with just more than two minutes left tying the game and eventually allowing the Penguins to win in a shootout. He took a pass from Syndey Crosby at the point and he put a low hard wrist shot through traffic for his fifth goal of the year.

  • Another former Gopher found the scoring column Friday night as Jordan Leopold scored his first goal of the year in a 6-5 overtime win over Dallas. At the time his goal gave Florida a 4-2 lead in the second period. Leopold jumped into the play on the rush and was streaking down the left side when he took a pass from Steven Reinprecht and one-timed a snapshot by the goalie. Reinprecht had already had a natural hat trick to start the scoring and give Florida an early 3-0 lead in the first period. Former Gopher Keith Ballard assisted on one goal in this game and former UMD Bulldog Matt Niskanen assisted on a goal for Dallas.

  • Saturday Blake Wheeler got what stood as the game-winner in the second period as Boston shut out Edmonton 2-0. Wheeler got a quick feed from the the corner and was able to one-time it past the goalie while being covered and being in very tight to the goalie. It was the fourth goal of the year for Wheeler and already his second game-winner. He had three game-winning goals last year.
