DIII Hockey opens this weekend

It's officially hockey season....

With the Gophers and Wild now in full swing, another sign of winter as we flip our calendars to November is the beginning of the season for DIII hockey.

Most MIAC teams begin their seasons on the road in non conference games. Check out where each MIAC team will open up the 2006-2007 season.

Bethel and St. Thomas are expected to be the top teams and are ranked in the top 15 nationally.

The Bethel Royals went 18-10-1 last year. It will be the first year with Joel Johnson at the as Head Coach and he welcomes some talented freshman this year as well.

St. John's finished below the .500 mark last year and missed the MIAC playoffs for the first time in 11 years. However, the the Johnnies only lost six players from last year's roster and are looking to fight their way to the top of the conference again this year. The most notable incoming freshman might be Ben Hause, former goalie from the 2006 state champions Cretin-Derham Hall.

St. Mary's University lost only four players from last year's team and they hope that this is the year that the Cardinals don't fall just short of the playoffs, like previous years.

2007-2008 Roster

St. Olaf enjoyed a successful season last year and along with returning some top end talent have added some promising recruits. Three freshman that stick out from the roster are Breck's John Aho, Maple Grove's Andy Benson and Duluth East's Will McLean.
2007-2008 Roster

St. Thomas is expected to contend for a conference championship again this year despite several key losses from last year's team. One reason for that is the Tommies are on the receiving end of two DI transfers. Tyler Chestnut is a goalie transfer from Holy Cross and defenseman Adam Davis, a Lakeville native, transferred from UMD. The Tommies open up 2007-2008 on the road in Duluth and Superior where six players who played hockey at either Duluth East or Marshall will return home.
