Matt Cullen earns first star in Hurricanes win

Former Moorhead Spud and St. Cloud State Huskie star Matt Cullen helped lead Carolina to an easy 7-2 win over Floriday in one of only two games played Friday night.
Cullen's goal was a blast of a slap shot as he entered the zone down the left side. It came early in the third period after he assisted on a second period goal. SEE GOAL HERE
Cullen who has also played for the Panthers, Ducks and Rangers has scored 40 points or more in his last four seasons. He is turning 33 next month and has put together one of the more impressive careers of active Minnesota natives currently in the NHL.
Jordan Leopold is in his first season with Florida and assisted on Florida's first goal. It was the first point of the year for the former Armstrong Falcon and Gopher star defenseman. Leopold just recently turned 29 and is with his third NHL team after just completing his second stint with Calgary last year.
Leopold joined another former Gopher on the Panthers blueline Keith Ballard. Ballard has one assist on in Florida's first three games. The Panthers are still looking for their first win of the season. When they play New Jersey tonight there will be three former Minnesota Gopher defensemen on the ice with the Devils Paul Martin.

Dallas defeated Calgary 5-2 in the only other game Friday night. Another Minnesota native defenseman was in action with former UMD Bulldog Matt Niskanen playing for Dallas. Niskanen who is from Virginia only played two seasons with the Bulldogs before making the leap to the NHL. Niskanen has been a rock for the Stars playing in 158 games in his first two NHL seasons. This year Niskanen is a -1 and has one assist in three games.
