NHL Weekend Recap MN Pulse

Former Blaine Bengal and St. Cloud State Huskie Matt Hendricks was drafted by Nashville in the 5th round of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. After being drafted he went on and had a good college career at St. Cloud playing four years with his best season being his sophomore year where he had 19 goals and 20 assists.

In Hendricks first professional year in 2004 he was sent down from the AHL to the ECHL after just 15 games and only three points. He finished the season in the ECHL scoring 24 goals and 26 assists in 54 games. The next three years he played for three different teams in the AHL putting his best season together last year with the Providence Bruins where he scored 22 goals and had 30 assists in 67 games. After 258 minor league games he started his first year in the NHL when the Colorado Avalanche gave him a chance this year after being called up for four games late last year. He scored his first NHL goal Saturday in a 4-3 shootout loss to Chicago.

The goal tied the game at 1-1 early in the second period. Hendricks was forechecking and put a good hit on the Blackhawks defenseman creating a turnover. Hendricks crashed the net and was able to backhand in the rebound.

Hendricks had a chance in the shootout to make it an even more memorable night but was shut down. He was the ninth Avalance player to go on the shootout as the two teams were deadlocked. Andrew Ladd scored following Hendricks' attempt and scored giving Chicago the win.

Another former St. Cloud State and Shattuck-St. Mary's star Ryan Malone had his biggest day with his new Tampa Bay Lightning team scoring a hat trick in the 5-2 win over Carolina. The third goal was an empty netter.
