UMD Bulldogs win Friday, Lose Sunday

The University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs finished 1-1 in this year's Superior Cup with a 4-3 win over Lake Superior State Friday night and a 3-1 defeat to Northern Michigan Sunday.

Justin Fontaine led the offensive charge over the weekend scoring two power play goals Friday and adding an assist in each game ovwer the weekend. Rob Bordson and Jack Connolly also scored for the Bulldogs Friday and Connolly tallied a goal in Sunday's loss.

Fontaine's big weekend comes after a huge sophomore season last year where the Alberta native scored 15 goals and added 33 assists.

Fotaine and Connolly are joined by former Breck standout Jordan Fulton on UMD's top line and will likely provide a bulk of the offense this year for UMD.

The big question for the Bulldogs is who will fill the shoes of Alex Stalock. Stalock is the former South St. Paul goalie who has made a name for himself playing well when on the big stage. He left UMD year early to pursue his professional career. International Falls native Brady Hjelle started friday night for UMD stopping 25 of the 28 shots he faced. It was the second start for the sophomore and only the third appearance.

Sophomore Kenny Reiter got his first collegiate start in Sunday's game. Reiter is a sophomore from Pittsburgh that played for Fairbanks of the NAHL before coming to Duluth. Reiter faced 35 shots allowing 3 goals in the loss.

One of UMD's top recruits is Dan DeLisle who played last year for Totino-Grace. DeLisle centered the fourth line on Friday and centered the third line on Sunday. He was selected 89th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in this year's draft. DeLisle's uncle Joel DeLisle played for UMD almost two decades ago.

Jake Hendrickson a former Burnsville star centered the fourth line Sunday in his first collegiate game and got an assist and two shots on goal. Hendrickson played lasdt year with Sioux City of the USHL.

In Alex Stalock news, Stalock is currently playing for the Worcester Sharks of the AHL. He is 1-0-1 with 51 saves and five goals allowed in his first two professional games.
